CLATHRUS RUBER
Even as a child I always loved to read books on mushrooms, perhaps because there were several in the house, seeing how much pleasure to my going to look at the same time recognize each specimen is not necessarily edible, collected in the forest ....
So when I thumbed through the pages I remained fascinated by the strangest specimens rather than those who already knew and ate, and
" Clathrus ruber" was obviously one of those .
Several years ago in a trip to the island of Elba, he had seen one and I had no doubt about the species, the only problem I have not had a chance to take a picture.
From that day I have not had the chance to see more.
In these days my friend on Facebook,
Andrea Battaglini gave me the opportunity to publish two of his photos gladly show you in this article. He took these pictures last spring in the hills of Versilia, for he was the first mushroom of the sort he had encountered on his path!
I can not say they are likely to be rare in Italy, but I think it is very easy to find, at least as far as my experience, but certainly recognizable to anyone !.... The
"Clathrus ruber" is part of the family Clathraceae , gender Clathrus , especially C lathrus ruber , which in Latin has the meaning Clathrus, gate, and ruber, red. This curious fungus is saprophytic, growing in small groups, and much of the morphological details, as all the smelly fungi in general, the type
P hallus impudicus , when it is mature, it releases a liquid that tends to dark greenish brown to black, the smell mortuary, which can recognize and feel at a distance. The first was described in 1592 by Fabio Colonna, who called
"mushroom lantern" for its spherical shape, slightly pointed, perforated and red as a lantern lit.
When born, like other species of fungi, it seems an egg, chewy, white called "esoperidio, the base has a small root-like a bud. When the egg, ie the Volvo, open coming out of the mushroom-shaped cage with large holes slightly jagged, initially the network is a light pink color intensity increases with growth, to become scarlet at the end of maturation. can reach 10 cm diameto.
The spores are contained within a granular mucilage, which as mentioned above has a fetid odor.
Meat, as gelatinous and fragile to the touch, is not edible, not very attractive especially for its characteristic odor.
news seems to be found, it is edible when the state of ovolo, after it was removed the gelatinous layer.
not advise anyone to trample on the egg, that its persistent in the environment that propagates immediately!
